And the winners are...
At some point many adults quietly ask themselves...
“When was the last time I felt like a decompressed actual human being and not just a frazzled nervous system wrapped loosely in human skin?”
Burnout, is weird like that.
It rarely arrives dramatically.
Usually it sneaks in slowly through:
- poor sleep? ✅️
- nonstop stress? Yep!
- information overload? Good grief.
- emotional exhaustion? Ugh.
- too much responsibility? 😭
- too little recovery? 🥱
- and approximately 47 tabs open in the brain at all times???
And eventually even small tasks start feeling always overwhelming.
Replying to one email suddenly feels like,
“maybe i get up now and walk directionlessly for a solid year at least instead?”
Our society often responds to burnout by saying,
“Have you tried MORE caffeine and pretending harder and smiling wider?”
I think that strategy seems to be going not so hotso for most people.
That’s part of why adaptogens have become so popular.
Adaptogens are herbs and functional mushrooms traditionally used to support the body’s ability to adapt to and handle stress more efficiently.
Not,
“become invincible productivity machine.” (affect vintage computer robot voice)
More like,
“maybe your nervous system deserves basic human compassion.” (spoken by the Oracle from the 1st matrix movie)
Different adaptogens have different personalities and strengths.
Reishi
Reishi is basically the opposite energy of,
“LET’S GO CRUSH THE DAY.”
Traditionally used for calm, balance, recovery, and nervous system support, reishi is often associated with,
- rest
- resilience
- grounding
- emotional regulation
- deeper recovery
Reishi feels less like: “performance optimization” and more like,
“perhaps we sit under a tree and feel existence for a while.” (or imagine it! Your nervous system can't tell the difference!)
Eleuthero
Eleuthero, sometimes called Siberian, or Poor Man's ginseng, has traditionally been used to support resilience, endurance, stress adaptation, recovery and so much more.
It’s often associated with helping the body maintain steadier energy during prolonged stress rather than simply delivering a short-term burst of stimulation.
Which honestly feels deeply relevant to modern life.
Because many people today are not experiencing: normal tiredness.
They are experiencing,
- nervous-system overload
- chronic overstimulation
- emotional fatigue
- constant psychological input
- and low-grade existential buffering.
Gynostemma
Gynostemma — sometimes nicknamed “the immortality herb” — sounds like something maybe a mountain wizard would hand you before sending you on a spiritual side quest.
Guess what? That’s not entirely inaccurate!
Traditionally used in parts of Asia to support longevity, vitality, and resilience, gynostemma is often associated with,
- stress support
- energy balance
- cardiovascular health
- Immune super stardom!
Many people have, and will continue to, describe it as feeling balancing rather than stimulating. Totally safe before bedtime!
Which is refreshing in a world where nearly every “energy product” feels like it was designed by a boardroom of adrenaline junkies about to squirrel suit off a vortex in Sedona.
Shilajit
Shilajit is one of the least known about and fascinating substances in traditional herbalism. Shilajit! Too shilajit to quit! No? No one gets that? Thats cool, im getting old.
Ahem! Anyway. Technically speaking, it’s a mineral-treasure trove resin found in mountainous regions after centuries of plant matter slowly breaking down under pressure. In other words...Nature's homemade compost. Not yuck. My daughter has loved it since she was 1.
Which honestly sounds slightly alarming until you realize humans have used it traditionally for centuries at least.
Shilajit has historically been associated with,
- vitality
- stamina
- recovery
- mineral support
- and resilience during physical and mental stress
And listen to this, because it's awesome. One of the traditional translations of the word Shilajit is...ready?
"Conqueror of mountains and destroyer of weakness"
Um, sure. I'll have some of the mountain conquering, weakness destroying crazy black tar looking stuff. I GUESS!!
At Space of Love Foods, I've formulated our blends like Activate around the idea that sustainable wellbeing probably matters more than endless stimulation. I could be wrong! Despite what my 10-year-old daughter thinks, I don't know absolutely everything.
Yet.
And I hope never to.
