Coffee Is Amazing… Until It Isn’t
Let’s begin with an important truth:
Coffee is at the top of the list of my favorites. Don't see myself giving this up ANY time soon.
Honestly, I love coffee.
The smell. The ritual. The first sip. The temporary illusion that I’ve suddenly become a fully functional and emotionally stable adult!
Beautiful.
This is NOT one of those:
“coffee is poison and only forest mushrooms can save humanity” articles.
But…
have you ever had coffee suddenly go from:
“Ahhh yes… vitality and productivity…”
to:
“Why is my nervous system auditioning for a disaster documentary?!”
Because apparently there’s a fine line between: energized, and at the frayed ends of sanity? Hm. I suppose so...
A lot of people eventually notice that coffee hits differently when they’re:
- stressed out
- underslept
- overwhelmed
- emotionally fried
- surviving modern life with approximately three functioning brain cells
And at some point the second cup stops feeling inspiring and starts feeling like:
“perhaps today, we vibrate directly through the walls!”
Which honestly makes sense.
Coffee stimulates the nervous system. And modern life is already doing parkour on most people’s nervous systems 24 hours a day.
Again: this does NOT mean coffee is bad.
Some people thrive on it.
Some people can drink espresso at 9 PM (younger me!) and then peacefully fall asleep like enlightened woodland creatures.
I personally am not one of those people.
What many people are actually looking for isn’t necessarily: MORE stimulation.
They want:
- steady energy
- clearer focus
- resilience
- better recovery
- fewer emotional support beverages
That’s part of why adaptogens have become so popular.
Adaptogenic herbs and functional mushrooms like rhodiola, cordyceps, reishi, astragalus, and eleuthero have traditionally been used to support energy, resilience, and stress adaptation in a more balanced way.
Not:
“GO FASTER.”
More like:
“Hey friend… maybe unclench your nervous system a little?”
At Space of Love Foods, I actually enjoy combining coffee with our Activate or Restore blends rather than replacing coffee altogether.
For many people, adding adaptogenic herbs and mushrooms to coffee can create a smoother, more grounded experience with less of the spike-and-crash chaos.
And yes — rhodiola itself can feel too stimulating for some people in excessive amounts or lower-quality formulas. In some individuals, high doses may even contribute to headaches or overstimulation.
That’s one reason we intentionally use a carefully balanced amount of high-quality rhodiola within a broader herbal formula designed to feel supportive rather than overwhelming.
Because honestly?
Most people today don’t need more intensity.
They need:
- better recovery
- steadier energy
- nervous system support
- deeper resilience and maybe one fewer existential crisis before noon.
